Kabak Kemane
A gourd that cries like the earth itself..
About this instrument
The Kabak Kemane is carved from a gourd, strung with gut or steel, and bowed vertically like a small cello. Its tone is raw, direct, and emotional — sometimes weeping, sometimes meditative. What fascinates me most is its resonance: that earthy timbre carries both fragility and power, as though the sound itself were drawn from the soil.
In these videos, I explore the instrument’s extremes — the high, tense singing of the upper register and the deep, hollow resonance of the lower. Each seems to tell a different story, yet both remain unmistakably organic.

The Kemane’s bowed resonance lends itself to introspection, ritual, and slow emotional build — as fitting for meditative silence as for cinematic tension.
