Cümbüş Tanbur

Dark, highly resonant, and metallically bright all at once …

About this instrument

Continuing my journey through the Saz family, I discovered one much larger and deeper in register—the Tanbur. Traditionally a wooden Turkish instrument, it has a long and fascinating history, with even some debate about the “proper” way to play it. When I came across the Cümbüş Tanbur—a louder, more resonant variation—I knew I was in for a treat. Its voice is rich and powerful, making it a joy to play even at a slow, meditative pace. This instrument has a distinctly cultural sound, and it’s certainly not for those shy about contemplative emotion —its tone demands to be felt as much as heard.

In the first video I showcase its slower, meditative nature. In the second, I pick it up with an Arabic-influenced melody that shows its percussive brightness.
